People often ask what is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy? Broadly the terms ‘counselling’, ‘therapy’ and ‘psychotherapy’ are similar and refer to the process of meeting with a professionally trained therapist to discuss and help manage personal issues. A counsellor has specific training in counselling theory and skills as well as experience of face to face counselling. Typically counsellors conduct medium and short term work. A psychotherapist has also trained in counselling theory and skills but generally works in greater depth and thus psychotherapy is often medium to long term. |
